Chiu, CEO of Morgan Environments partners to create a new green workforce educational initiative alliance.  Lilian, former President Elect of the US Green Building Council South Florida Chapter launches a new training and education initiative to provide green workforce training to the Florida market.

"There is a significant lapse in green workforce training and given my background and great colleagues and partners in the industry, it felt like the appropriate time for Morgan Environments to create strategic alliances to provide this training."   On why she stepped down as incoming President she stated "The role of President of the USGBC local chapters has been one of mostly administrative work, my responsibility to the workforce community outweighed anything the Chapter was doing, frankly the Chapter was mostly ineffective in communicating and integrating with the local green community and it was always a source of frustration."   Stating "it was time to get something done, not merely talk about it."

Strategic alliance partners include the City of Miami Office of Sustainable Initiatives and Miami Dade College.

With the green building market expected to reach $96 billion to $194 billion by 2013, more professionals are seeking training in green building certification. A McGraw-Hill Construction 2008 report shows that the value of green building construction is projected to increase to $60 billion by 2010, these projections are giving many builders, architects, interior designers and lawyers a reason to sign up for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, also known as LEED, accreditation courses. The University of Miami’s Continuing and International Education division is offering LEED accredited professional courses that offer accreditation exam preparation and development training to understand and apply green building standards.

Lilian Chiu, lecturer on LEED at UM, said the program was developed to complement the growth the green building industry is experiencing.  Ms. Chiu, the incoming president to the US Green Building Council South Florida Chapter, said the curriculum was developed for architects, engineers, executives and recent graduates who want to learn about and better understand the LEED certification system, a green building rating system developed by the Green Building Council that certifies sustainable projects – ratings range from silver to gold to platinum.

Ms. Chiu said UM’s curriculum focuses on green building practices and rating system uses and is tailored to cover all components related to an individual’s practice, from those seeking general knowledge to those looking to learn the specifics.

Ms. Chiu is CEO of Morgan Environments, a company that focuses on strategic planning and business development strategies to beef up companies’ green expertise.   “Green building saves you money in operations, but also forces you to build the right size,” she said.  Aside from preparing professionals to take LEED’s accredited professional exam to earn the credentials, she said the program provides development training that participants can use throughout their careers.  “The credentials allow them to gain that expertise and be more well-rounded in the language,” she said.
